You may recognise Paul Marc Davis from his portrayal of Lord
Draben's ghost in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the
Philosopher's Stone. Or perhaps as the eponymous hero in the
Channel Four film Casanova, the Trickster in the Sarah Jane
Adventures, or the Futurekind Chieftain from Doctor Who. But in
September, the actor and former sculptor set up shop on London's
Hackney Road, under the MacSmith banner, performing good
old-fashioned hands-on repairs to Apple Macs both old and new.
Davis has never trained in IT or electrical engineering, but
rather has combined what he describes as natural curiosity and a
deep understanding of computers, with his ability to communicate --
more specifically, his ability to communicate with creative people
who might not be particularly tech savvy. He once, for example,
described the reformatting and excavation of a client's collapsed
hard drive as "rebuilding a worm-eaten wardrobe with all your
clothes trapped inside". The client? A fashion designer.
